Kevin A. Barry: The Microblog |
Coimhéad fearg fhear na foighde. This is the personal microblog of Kevin A. Barry. It was designed as a way for him to express his unique perspective on life. The views and opinions of this blog are his own and do not represent those of his employer and/or his other professional affiliations. |
Jeff Sheng is a activst and photographer in West Hollywood. He is also someone I call a friend. During my days in Los Angeles, I remember Jeff telling me and his then-boyfriend, Brandon, about “Fearless,” his photography project on “out” lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender athletes on high school and college sports teams. It was his way of confronting homophobia in sports.
In Jeff’s recent “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” exhibit, he conveys the stories of the gay and bisexual men and women who serve in the U.S. military. And because his subjects are forced to keep their sexual orientations under wraps in order to serve, Shen’s photos are portraits without faces.
Jeff is very passionate about his work and it shows. Kudos to Jeff for this achievement! Its always nice to see people you know succeed.
As part of my work as a board member for the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association, I serve on the Rapid Response Task Force (RRTF) which monitors news coverage of LGBT issues and provides guidance to any inaccurate, unbalanced coverage.

It’s a few minutes after midnight and the deadline set by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals for amicus briefs — or “Friend of the Court” briefs — just passed.
Though a few briefs may still come in that haven’t been posted yet by the court (which we’ll be sure to post to this thread), so far 24 briefs have been submitted to the 9th Circuit in support of the American Foundations for Equal Rights legal team’s argument validating Judge Vaughn Walker’s historic decision that Prop 8 is unconstitutional. (Click here to read the opposition’s collection of amicus briefs.)
As I wrote last month, the byline on this amicus brief post should really say “Kathleen Perrin” — because, Kathleen is the one who spent who-knows-how-many-hours today uploading these amicus briefs to her Scribd account so that the P8TT community could digest them in the comments and here in this post.
If folks are up for it, the community could crowdsource reading these briefs, for the benefit of all involved — just as many of you did last month when the opposition filed their briefs.
OK, click into the extended entry to read the full list of more than 20 briefs and counting. Enjoy!

In a White House photo dated Wednesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, fresh on the heels of her “It Gets Better” video, to support Spirit Day dons a bright purple jacket in the Situation Room of the White House, amid the President and other military leaders.
Out of all the video responses out there to Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better” Project, this one spoke to me most.
“The thing about things getting better is it doesn’t just happen once. You don’t wake and say OMG things are better. Things keep getting better over and over often in really small ways.” Thank you Google and Tumblr for your support.
